Starting Tuberous Begonia

Begonia in the Greenhouse
  • Start indoors in February or early March
  • Plant concave side up in a seed flat filled with seed starting mix. Soil should barely cover the tuber. Keep evenly moist and grow in bright indirect light.
  • Once tuber has 4 to 6 leaves transplant into a 6" pot. Cover the tuber with 1" of starting mix. Add a green bamboo stake to help support the plant as it grows.
  • Pinch back to promote bushy growth.
  • Do not water directly on the leaves or flowers.
  • Begonia should flower 12 to 15 weeks after planting.
  • When growing in the garden, begonias prefer a location that is protected from the wind and hot sun. Aim for either early morning sun, or 50% shade. Begonias also will do well when grown in patio containers.
