Caring for Houseplants

Adding a plant to your home adds life. Not only are plants attractive, but they cleanse the air we breath. You just need to master a couple of gardening skills and you can have growing plants throughout your home.

Water

One of the most frequent questions our houseplant expert is asked is "How many times a week should I water my plants???"

That depends on a number of factors… Such as how warm and dry your home is, the type of plant, and even on the time of year. The best way to water is to test the soil. Insert your finger into the pot up to the first knuckle. If the soil is dry, water. If not, test again in a day or so. Water thoroughly so that the water runs out the bottom of the pot. If your plant is displayed in a decorative pot or plant sleeve, empty the water out so that the plant is not sitting in water.

Most plants are killed by over watering. Constant moisture around the root area will cause the roots rot. As the root mass is lost, the whole plant suffers and can eventually die. Plants that are over watered often have yellow leaves.

Plants that are under watered will often have browning on the tips and margins of the leaves. Leaves may also turn yellow. In severe cases, the plant may even collapse and look limp. Test your soil for moisture, and your plants will thank you.

Light

After watering practices, the next important factor is light. The amount of light a plant requires depends upon its type.

Light is describes as low, bright filtered, or high. Low light is found in most office locations. There is no sunshine. Shadows are nonexistent or very faint. Bright filtered light has lots of bright reflected sunshine. Shadows will not have a definite edge. Most plants prefer bright filtered light. High light conditions have direct sun. Shadows will have a definite edge.

Plants that are receiving too much light will look scorched. Plants that want more light will often be pale and stretched looking.
For best success, choose plants that prefer the light conditions in your location.
