Old Fashioned Bleeding Heart
This perennial favorite has been the mainstay of prairie gardens. Plants bloom with heart shaped flowers in early spring.
Bleeding heart are happiest when grown in well draining soil, rich in organic matter. They prefer a semi-shaded location with protection from the afternoon sun.
In the summer, bleeding heart become dormant and return the following spring.
Other varieties of bleeding heart include Fern Leaf Bleeding Heart, White Bleeding Heart, and Gold Heart. Gold Heart features bright yellow green leaves and pink heart shaped flowers. It gives an excellent pop of color in the shade garden.
